Amp Vs! HALO A23+ vs. NC 2250v2

These two amplifiers get compared constantly, and it's easy to see why. Both are Parasound stereo power amps. Both can drive a wide range of systems. Both deliver 45 amps of peak current per channel.

But they were built to answer two different questions.

The HALO A23+ was built for the listener. It's the refinement pick: a John Curl-designed circuit, high-bias Class A/AB operation, a direct-coupled signal path, and balanced XLR inputs. Everything about it is aimed at a dedicated two-channel music system where the quality of the presentation comes first.

The NC 2250v2 was built for the job. It's the muscle pick: more rated power, a continuous 2-ohm rating, THX Ultra2 certification, dual speaker outputs, and a feature set that shines in home theaters, large rooms, and custom installations - in-wall, in-ceiling, outdoor, the works.

Neither approach is better. They're different tools. Here's how to tell which one is yours.

The specs

What the numbers actually tell you

The power gap is real, but smaller than it looks. Going from 160 to 275 watts per channel buys you roughly 2.4 dB of additional maximum output. That's genuinely useful headroom with inefficient speakers or in a big room, but it doesn't put these two amps in different performance categories.

Where the 2250v2 truly pulls away is difficult loads and flexibility. It's continuously rated at 400 watts per channel into 2 ohms with its load switch engaged. It bridges to 750 watts into 8 or 4 ohms. It carries THX Ultra2 certification. And it sips just 35 watts at idle (less than half the A23+'s 75 watts) which matters when it's living in a closed rack or cabinet.

The A23+ pulls away on the fine points. The John Curl circuit runs high-bias Class A/AB. The signal path is direct-coupled- no capacitors or inductors in the way. The balanced XLR inputs use discrete input circuitry. And its damping factor is rated above 800 at 20 Hz versus above 150 for the 2250v2. (Damping factor reflects the amp's grip on the speaker load, though how audible that is depends on your speakers, crossover, and cables.)

One nuance worth knowing: the A23+ doesn’t carry a continuous 2-ohm rating, but it is stable with impedance dips below 2 ohms. That distinction matters. A speaker that briefly dips below 2 ohms is a very different load from one that stays at extremely low impedance for extended periods.

And a caution on the distortion figures: they describe measured behavior, not sound quality. The A23+ measures below 0.06% THD at full output; the 2250v2 measures 0.20% at full output but 0.015% at average listening levels. Don't use these numbers alone to predict which amp will sound better in your system. They're specs, not a scorecard.

Pick the HALO A23+ if...

This is the amp for a dedicated two-channel music system - the one in the room where you actually sit down and listen.

  • Your preamp has balanced outputs (like the HALO P6) and you want to use them.
  • Your speakers present a reasonably conventional load and your room is modest to medium-sized.
  • The quality of the presentation matters more to you than maximum wattage.
  • You specifically want the John Curl-designed Halo circuit and high-bias Class A/AB operation.
  • You want balanced XLR connectivity and RCA loop outputs.

Don't let the smaller number fool you: 160 watts per channel backed by 45 amps of peak current is substantial power for bookshelf speakers, moderate floorstanders, and plenty of larger loudspeakers.

Pick the NC 2250v2 if...

This is the amp for when the job gets tough - big rooms, tough speakers, home theater, and installs where one amp has to do several things at once.

  • It's driving the front left and right of a home theater from an AV processor's preamp outputs, and THX Ultra2 certification is a plus.
  • Your speakers are low-sensitivity, present a difficult impedance load, or your room simply demands more headroom.
  • You want to run two pairs of speakers with the built-in A/B outputs.
  • You want the option to bridge it for up to 750 watts of mono power into 8 or 4 ohms.
  • You're running subwoofers and want the built-in 20 or 40 Hz high-pass filter to take the deep bass off your main speakers.
  • You're powering in-wall, in-ceiling, or outdoor speakers, where the A/B outputs and low-impedance capability earn their keep.
  • It'll live in a rack or cabinet where cool, efficient operation matters.

Two practical notes: when running multiple speaker pairs at once, the combined impedance still needs to be considered, the 2–3 ohm load setting is what makes the 2250v2 so useful here. And for long wire runs, proper cable gauge matters no matter which amp you choose.

The bottom line

If your system is built around music - a conventional load, a modest-to-medium room, and a preamp with balanced outputs - the A23+ is likely your amp. If your speakers, your room, or your installation are asking for more, the 2250v2 was built for exactly that. They're not two versions of the same amplifier. They're two different tools, and the right one is the one that matches your job.
